[Button: Fight for Your Family]What Are Bed Sores?
Bed sores (aka pressure ulcers or pressure sores) are wounds that damage the skin and tissue on a part of the body that has been under high pressure or friction for a long period of time. Mild cases may include slight discoloration or bruising, while severe sores may turn into open wounds or even expose the bone. Ulcers are most common on areas of the body where there isn’t as much padding or where the bone sticks out, such as the tailbone, ankles, shoulder blades, elbows, or heels.
Why Are Bed Sores So Common in Nursing Homes?
Because pressure sores develop due to continued pressure on a single area of the body, they are especially common for people who are often sitting or lying down, such as those in a nursing home.
Residents are especially likely to develop pressure ulcers if they are unable to move themselves and staff members neglect to change their position. Certain medical conditions—diabetes, vascular disease, poor nutrition, incontinence, and even just age—also make patients more susceptible to sores.
Staff should take extra care to monitor and move residents in these situations. Unfortunately, residents don’t always receive this necessary level of care, which can lead to injuries and nursing home neglect cases.
How Do I Know If I Have a Case?
The following scenarios are common situations where the nursing home could be held responsible for a resident developing bed sores, but not all instances of these injuries can warrant a nursing home neglect case. The best way to determine if you have a viable case or not is to talk with one of our lawyers.
- The resident’s sores have progressed to a more severe stage due to a lack of intervention.
- The resident has developed ulcers on multiple parts of their body, indicating neglect.
- The resident has no underlying condition that makes them more vulnerable to bed sores.
- Nursing home staff have failed to regularly reposition residents, leading to pressure sores.
- Nursing home staff have discovered wounds but have not made an effort to address them.
- Nursing home staff haven’t communicated with the resident’s doctor about the sores.
- Nursing home staff have not followed the doctor’s instructions regarding the pressure sores.
